For operators of the Hawker 800, 800XP, and 850XP, servicing the lavatory waste system has long been one of the more frustrating — and at times unpleasant — routine maintenance tasks. While the process has remained largely unchanged for years, the challenges associated with the original design continue to impact both convenience and operational reliability.
At West Star Aviation, we’ve installed this waste drain valve modification on numerous aircraft over the years, and it remains a highly requested upgrade among Hawker operators looking for a more practical, modern solution.
The Challenge with the Original Design
The factory-installed waste servicing system requires draining the lavatory tank through the ventral fuel tank service area, using an external connection that depends on a secondary pressurization plug commonly referred to as the “donut.”
This design presents several ongoing issues:
- Removal of the plug requires a T-handle tool, adding complexity to a routine task
- If the lavatory tank valve is leaking, removing the plug can result in uncontrolled discharge
- Reinstallation of the plug is often inconsistent or overlooked during ground servicing
When the plug is not properly installed — or missing entirely — the operational impact becomes more serious.
Operational Risk: MMEL Limitations
If the secondary pressurization plug is not installed, the Minimum Equipment List (MMEL) restricts the aircraft to:
- Unpressurized flight only
- Maximum altitude of 15,000 feet
For operators, this can quickly lead to dispatch delays or cancellations, particularly when operating in regions where parts availability is limited. What should be a simple servicing issue can escalate into hours or even days of operational disruption.
The Solution: Modernized Waste Drain System
West Star Aviation has developed and received approval to install an improved waste drain valve configuration that eliminates many of the shortcomings of the original system. Key improvements include:
Integrated Secondary Pressurization Plug
The redesigned system incorporates the secondary plug directly into a hinged cap with an over-center locking mechanism. This eliminates the risk of:
- Misplaced or forgotten plugs
- Improper installation
- Additional tooling requirements
Controlled, Cleaner Operation
A spring-loaded internal fluid valve remains closed until the ground service cart is properly connected. The valve is then opened using a simple external lever — preventing accidental discharge and significantly reducing the risk of spills.
Simplified Closure
Once servicing is complete, closing the system is as easy as securing the hinged cap with the over-center handle — ensuring a consistent, reliable seal every time.
Benefits for Operators
This modification delivers meaningful improvements in both maintenance efficiency and operational reliability:
- Cleaner, safer waste servicing process
- Reduced risk of leaks and spills
- Elimination of loose or missing components
- Improved dispatch reliability
- Reduced maintenance discrepancies related to improper servicing
Proven Experience, Trusted Results
West Star Aviation has extensive experience supporting the Hawker 800 series, including avionics upgrades, interior refurbishments, paint, and structural modifications. Our teams have successfully installed this waste drain valve upgrade across multiple Hawker 800 series aircraft, delivering consistent results and high customer satisfaction.
Seamless Integration with Scheduled Maintenance
One of the key advantages of this modification is its flexibility. The upgrade can be easily incorporated during:
- Scheduled maintenance events
- Avionics installations
- Interior refurbishments
- Paint cycles
This allows operators to enhance functionality without adding unnecessary downtime.
