These installations are taking place at West Star’s Chattanooga, TN (CHA), and Grand Junction, CO (GJT), facilities, following the recent FAA validation for the Phenom 300 series.

West Star Aviation Offers Solution for Obsolete ELTs in Legacy 600 Aircraft

Embraer Legacy 600 aircraft came equipped from the factory with a Satori 96A / 97A ELT since the airframe’s inception in the early 2000s. This ELT provided emergency location coverage over the 121.5 mhz/243.0 mhz frequency.

While this ELT has provided durable service for years, Satori has since stopped manufacturing it in favor of transitioning to a 406 mhz transmitter with GPS location capabilities, making the 121.5 units obsolete.

Many operators are faced with a problem now: as the ELTs are no longer manufactured, the batteries required to keep the units airworthy and operational are no longer being made.

West Star Aviation has provided a solution with the option of installing an Artex C406-1 mhz ELT system. This new system replaces in its entirety the now virtually obsolete Satori 96A and 97A units.

This new unit broadcasts on the 406 frequency and can also be ordered with or without internal navigation interface capability (to communicate with the aircraft’s installed navigation equipment).

Further, if the customer elects to have this done during a heavy maintenance event, particularly when the interior floorboards and side panels are removed, the customer can save a substantial amount on the installation cost.

Full new ELT installation can be done in as little as three days. Because almost all of the early serial number Legacy 600 aircraft are affected, this is a welcome option for operators today.

West Star ALN has already installed several of these new ELTs, and the owners and operators have been pleased with the results.

Honeywell’s new Special Program No. 28 for its AS907-3-1E/HTF7500E engines is now available for Embraer Legacy and Praetor operators who are MSP and MSP Gold customers with the Honeywell Ensemble.

Legacy 450/500 and Praetor 500/600 operators now have an option that allows them to download engine data wirelessly rather than using a laptop. The aircraft mounted Engine Data Gateway (EDG) automates the transmission of data wirelessly via Wi-Fi from the engine ECU to Forge and CAMP for complete engine health monitoring.

WSA can install the Engine Data Gateway (EDG-100) unit and related hardware kit per the Honeywell STC, #STC-02816LA.

Important notes:

WSA will obtain verification from Honeywell that the customer’s MSP contract includes the Honeywell Ensemble.
EDG-100 will be installed per the STC and will be mounted in the aft equipment bay (unpressurized area). A right-to-use letter for the STC also will be obtained.
Typical installation takes three days to complete.
WSA is a Honeywell channel partner, and the installation is free of charge to customers with a current and active Honeywell MSP contract.

Let’s Talk Engine Low Utilization Inspections

According to Embraer Phenom Specialists at West Star Aviation, a recurring comment they hear from operators time and again is that if their engines have been through a Hot Section inspection, they believe a Low Utilization Inspection is not required.

This is simply not the case. The LUI is actually a Pratt & Whitney inspection requirement.

A low utilization engine is defined as an engine that has not been subject to disassembly and inspection of both the hot section and the cold section at an approved facility by the end of the service intervals listed below.

Note: An additional one month or 10 flight hours, whichever comes first, is permitted for scheduling purposes for the initial LUI and the 24 mo LUI intervals. These inspections are in addition to the 12 mo/800 hr engine inspections.

Let’s Get Specific

For the P&W PW617F-E engines on the Phenom 100:

The engine LUI is due at the end of 12 yrs since entry into service/overhaul or 13 yrs since engine manufacture, whichever comes first.
Subsequent LUIs are due every 24 mo provided the visual inspections, borescope inspections, and performance calibration runs are satisfactory.
The LUI is done on-wing.

The LUI procedure for PW617F-E engines:

External wash, hand wash the LP Compressor, and Compressor Wash–Desalination tasks
Engine calibration task
Borescope inspection of the following components: HP Compressor Rotor, HP Compressor Impeller, Diffuser Exit Duct assemblies, and Fuel Nozzles

For the P&W PW535E engines on the Phenom 300:

The engine LUI is due 10 yrs since entry into service/overhaul or 11 yrs since engine manufacture, whichever comes first.
Subsequent LUIs are due every 24 mo provided the visual inspections, borescope inspections, and performance calibration runs are satisfactory.
The LUI is done on-wing.

The LUI procedure for PW535E engines:

External wash, fan wash, and desalination wash
Inspect for corrosion of structural cases, ducts
Performance calibration run
Borescope inspection of the following components: HP Compressor and Diffuser Exit Ducts

Announces Smith as New Embraer Program Manager (CHA)

West Star is pleased to announce Michael Smith as their new Program Manager for Embraer at their Chattanooga, TN (CHA) facility.

Michael has 14 years of aviation experience, including eight at Embraer, where he earned his A&P through OT. While working for the Embraer demonstration team, Michael also earned his IA. He attended Embry-Riddle Worldwide for his bachelor’s degree in aviation maintenance and as of spring 2023, Michael earned his Certified Aviation Manager certification from the NBAA.

Before joining WSA, Michael was the Embraer Product Director for Jet East. He was involved with business development; managing customer accounts; providing technical support to customers, sales, and operations; and working closely with facilities to manage schedules and tooling.

“Michael’s skills and experience, along with his Embraer expertise, will contribute to West Star’s long-term goal of continuing to grow our expert teams while also providing the first-class service our valued customers are used to,” said Steve Goede, General Manager (CHA).
