Aspen Colorado: Citation 550B

Passengers of a Citation 550B opened the main entry door and high wind caught it and forced it open the rest of the way. The unexpected gust hit the door with such force that it broke the door hinges and damaged the skin.

West Star Aviation’s AOG/MRT Team coordinated with a DER while en route to provide a temporary repair and ferry parameters. Once on-site we performed the additional damage reporting and subsequent repairs.

The approved tech data was provided, but the speed tape applied to the hole remaining after we removed the broken portion of the hinge would tear when the door was opened.  The crew was literally taped into the aircraft after they boarded.  They were on their way the next day.

The aircraft was ferried to the West Star Aviation GJT facility, where the hinge assembly was replaced and necessary services to return to service were provided.
