As summer heats up, did you know that extreme heat was the second leading cause of weather-related deaths? As the Environmental, Health & Safety Director for West Star Aviation I pay close attention to the heat index during these summer months.
Temperatures can skyrocket in a short period of time due to factors such as working in direct sunlight, humidity, lack of air flow, and the wearing of safety equipment. Keeping in mind that our maintenance technicians are typically inside of an aircraft, out on the ramp, and sitting in the elements, we have a recipe for potential disaster if not properly managed and supervised.
MROs and operators with their own maintenance personnel can find excellent guidance information for keeping workers safe by visiting www.osha.gov/heat/heat-index.
Another great tip is conducting a daily weather awareness brief during your morning tool box talks and at change of shift passdowns. Employees working in the heat should be checked on often to ensure they are hydrated, alert, and above all safe.
Enjoy the summer…safely!
